Cleanings
Frequent cleanings are important to maintain a healthy smile. The gums and jawbone form a foundation to support the teeth. Inflammation of the gums, indicated by red, puffy and bleeding gums, is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is a percursor to bone loss, however it is reversible. Because bone cannot be regenerated after it is lost, good oral hygiene is necessary to prevent the bone loss from ever occurring.
Besides good oral hygiene at home, it is imperative to get frequent cleanings because the dentist will remove plaque and calculus (tartar) that regular brushing and flossing cannot. During routine cleanings, the gums and teeth are assessed, cleaned, flossed and polished. If there are signs of prolonged inflammation and bone loss, scaling and root planing (a “deep cleaning”) may be needed to treat the gum disease. Also during a routine checkup, Dr. Brazeal will conduct an oral cancer screening. Early detection of suspicious lesions is crucial for better treatment outcomes. |
